Michael Snow : Souffle solaire / Solar Breath

In an artist's statement that is reflective and personal, Snow writes of the origins of his video projection Solar Breath [Northern Caryatids]. Déry expands upon the contemplative nature of the work. In order to mirror the concept of foldage or "pliage" in Snow's work, the publication is composed of separate documents folded within a fastened binding. Produced on the occasion of the 2005 edition of Le Mois de la photo de Montréal. In English and French.

Isaacs Seen
Edited by Donnalu Wigmore

Av Isaacs and the galleries he founded had a profound influence on the Canadian art scene for nearly fifty years. From the 1955 opening of the Greenwich Gallery through the three decades of the Isaacs Gallery and the Isaacs/Innuit Gallery, Avrom Isaacs has been a prime mover of art and artists. Reminiscent of a scrap book with hundreds of photographs from private collections, this publication provides the reader with an intimate look at the man and the artists he fostered. Isaacs was first in Toronto to open a contemporary art gallery and the first in the world to open a gallery dedicated specifically to Inuit art. He had a defining influence on the careers of artists like Dennis Burton, William Kurelek, Michael Snow, Tony Urquhart, Joyce Wieland, Jessie Oonark and artists from Baker Lake.

The astonishing range of contributors testifies to Isaacs' lengthy and multi-faceted career. Artists like Dennis Burton and Gathie Falk, curators and directors like Dennis Reid and Pierre Theberge, gallery owners like Olga Korper and Don Lake and critics like Gary Michael Dault and Robert Fulford are among the 50 individuals who reflect on the trials and triumphs of fifty years in the art world. Includes several colour plates, a comprehensive listing of all Isaacs Gallery exhibitions and Av Isaac's own commentary. Co-published with The Justina M. Barnicke Gallery, Hart House and with the Art Gallery of Ontario.

Timelength

Michèle Thériault & Stefan Jovanovic

Today the moving image is at the centre of a growing number of exhibitions. This publication reflects upon the nature of time itself in film and video. Through works marked by slowness of their movement or the quasi-fixity of the image, the notion of duration is examined in relation to different modes of presentation. Work by young artists - Pascal Grandmaison, Gwen MacGregor, Jocelyn Robert and Jeroen de Rijke/Willem de Rooij - are made to enter into a dialogue with two artists whose early experimentation with duration in film were transformative to their medium: Michael Snow (One Second in Montreal, See You Later) and Andy Warhol (Empire, Screen Tests). Three essays are accompanied by artists' commentaries. This publication signals the gallery's renewed commitment to the integration of Canadian with international art discourse. In English and French.
