Sylvie Bouchard rose to prominence in the 1980s as one of the first artists to return to painting. She was known for her creation of undefined spaces, her use of a fragmented narration and the dreamlike atmosphere that emanated from her work. Her new work engages these issues but renders them in a three dimensional environment. Co-published with the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.

Depuis le début des années quatre-vingt, Sylvie Bouchard s’est imposée comme une figure marquante de l’art contemporain au Québec. Il y est question d’espaces et de surfaces, de lieux dont la profondeur est ambiguë et de thématiques se développant en rapport étroit avec les composantes matérielles. Amorcé durant la première moitié des années 1980, la pratique de Sylvie Bouchard se développe d'abord dans le contexte de ce qu'on appelait "le retour de la peinture" après de longues années consacrées généralement à l'installation. À la suite des rigueurs réductrices du haut modernisme, qui tendaient à l'hermétisme et à l'opacité, les tableaux de Bouchard nous introduisaient à la nouvelle figuration. Les thèmes principaux de l'oeuvre de la peintre sont l'architecture, la nature et la position de la figure humaine dans des zones d'imprécision ou d'incohérence spatiales. Cette étrangeté provoque, chez le spectateur, une sensation de désorientation, voire d'inquiétude. À la fois explicite et abstrus, les tableaux de Bouchard semblent tout dire sans pourtant révéler quoi que ce soit. En français et anglais.

A long overdue 20 year retrospective on the work of one of the first Canadian artists to "return to painting" in the early 1980s. Bouchard's work is as at once a very personal artistic statement and an encapsulation of the movement of an entire generation of artists who reintroduced figurative painting into an art world then dominated by installation. Her mastery of a particularly cryptic form of what was once referred to as post-modern painting has evolved into an investigation of the practice of painting itself.
