Occupant une place toute particulière dans l'imagination des Montréalais, le canal Lachine est à la fois méconnu, accessible et mystérieux et c'est donc relever un nid tout désigné pour recevoir les dix oeuvres éphémères présentées sur ses berges et sur le plan d'eau. Ce lieu historique national, depuis longtemps enterré et oublié se prépare pour une deuxième grande ouverture comme voie maritime et les dix artistes qui la célèbrent le font avec humour, imagination et un sens historique. Accompagné de cinq textes qui explorent les oeuvres, le site et la nature de l'art public. Avec les oeuvres de Cozic, Pierre Bourgault, Michelle Héon, Francine Larivée, John McEwen et d'autres. A joyous collective welcome to the reinvigoration of an important Canadian historical monument. For 150 years, the Lachine Canal vehiculed extraordinary economic growth not just for Montreal but for the country as a whole. Buried and forgotten since the late 1950s, it has lately become the object of intense urban rehabilitation, with the abandoned industrial lands being transformed into parks and neighbourhoods and the canal itself soon to be open once again. Ten artists of various disciplines celebrate this event with singular pieces of public works. Ranging from humourously capricious to historically informed, they were installed for the summer of 2001 in, on, under and along the Canal to the delight of the hundreds of visitors who walk, jog, roll and cycle along its banks. Five essayists investigate the works, the site and the nature of public art itself. Featuring the work of Cozic, Pierre Bourgault, John McEwen and others. In English & French.

Pierre Bourgault : L'horizontale imaginée

Gravel examine les objets sculpturaux de Bourgault, fortement inspirés par la pratique et les paramètres de la navigation. Citant abondamment l'artiste, l'auteure souligne son intérêt pour la notion d'horizontalité et s'intéresse au processus d'élaboration des œuvres. Liste des œuvres publiques réalisées par l'artiste entre 1986 et 1996 et reproduction de quelques pages de son livre de bord.
