Living and working in Vancouver, Damian Moppett is at the forefront of a new generation of artists spawned by this fertile city and only indirectly linked to an earlier group of artists known as the Vancouver school. This monograph provides an opportunity for a closer look at the work of this protean photographer, filmmaker, painter, potter and sculptor whose works reference art of the past and present as well as popular culture, personal history and craft. With new works conceived especially for this exhibition - primarily sculpture and watercolours - Moppett explores the nature of authenticity and authorship. Dans un monde envahit d'images, 11 artistes canadiens se sont réunis pour décevoir, confondre et désorienter le spectateur hâtif. Utilisant une vaste variété de médias et de stratégies, leur intention et de nous faire arrêter et de nous forcer de reconsidérer ce que l'on voit. En déjouant habilement notre regard superficiel de leur oeuvre, chaque artiste cible les pièges de la première impression. Le résultat est un défi intoxicant où les choses ne sont pas ce qu'elles semblent être. Qu'il s'agisse du trompe-l'oeil dans les peintures de Taras Polataiko, des effets spéciaux dans les vidéos de Tim Lee, de la disparition d'Annie Baillargeon dans ses photographies ou de l'effet aveuglant des vidéos de Euan Macdonald, chaque oeuvre est quelque chose autre que ce dont nous pensions à première vue. In a world overrun with images, eleven artists from across the country have come together to deceive, confuse and puzzle the hasty viewer. Using a wide variety of media and strategies their intention is to stop us in our tracks and force us to reconsider what we are seeing. In skillfully thwarting a superficial reading of their works each artist targets the pitfalls of first impressions. The result is an intoxicating challenge where things are not quite as they appear. Taras Polataiko's paintings incorporate tromp l'oeil. Tim Lee's videos use trick special effects. Annie Baillargeon disappears into her own photographs. Euan Macdonald's videos blind the viewer entirely. Other participants include Jérôme Fortin, Germaine Koh, Kelly Mark, Jean-Marc Mathieu-Lajoie, Damian Moppett, Yannick Pouliot and Ana Rewakowicz. An original essay is accompanied by individual analyses of each artist's practice and career. In English and French.
