De-con-structions focuses on works by Quebec artists whose interventions question the museum as idea and context. The practices of these artists are experimental in that they seek new ways to perturb our expectations of what is an art object and how galleries have come to inform and influence our experience of art. The installations created by these artists prompt the museum to confront and question its role of collecting, preserving, and displaying art. In their hands, the gallery space itself is transformed from a repository for art into an artist's studio and laboratory. Partcipating artists are Michel de Broin, Jean-Pierre Gauthier, Karilee Fuglem, Tricia Middleton and Annie Thibault.

Les installations créées pour l'exposition confrontent le musée à une réflexion sur son rôle d'instrument de collection, de préservation et d'exposition d'oeuvres d'art. De lieu de présentation, l'espace est ici transformé en studio et laboratoire servant à élaborer, tester et expérimenter des idées par le processus de création et d'exposition. Jean-Pierre Gauthier creates sound environments using ordinary objects, modulated sounds and physical interaction. His art is divided between "systemic and mechanical-hygienic installations" and sound installations. The first group features everyday objects that are subjected to operations, such as contraction, compression, dissolution and disappearance. In other works, he weaves sound and space together through soundscapes, automated instruments and sound animation and various acoustic systems. The resulting installations are physically independent and bear symbolic reference to commercial exploitation and economic cycles. The analog animation movements of these kinetic creations lend his installations a faintly antiquated character despite their obvious technological ingenuity. This publication is the first monograph dedicated to his work. Gauthier was the 2004 winner of the Sobey Art Award, Canada's pre-eminent prize for young Canadian artists. In English and French.

The Idea of North

Sound-based artists from Canada, Iceland, Norway and Sweden explore the idea of North as a perception of place and locality rather than as a geographic location. The title refers to an early Glenn Gould composition meant to reveal the "tone" of a place as something more than the sum of words and sounds. The publication includes writing from each of the venues, a curatorial essay and comments by the Icelandic and Norwegian curators. The DVD contains sound and video excerpts as well as visuals from all of the artists. Participating Canadian artists include Jean-Pierre Gauthier and Marla Hlady. Co-published with Eyelevel Gallery and Saint Mary's University Art Gallery.
