Le projet qu'a créé David Altmejd pour le Pavillon canadien exploite l'architecture du lieu en associant les particularités du bâtiment à une fonction aviaire, l'imaginant comme un abri pour les oiseaux, leur permettant de nicher et de se nourrir en toute liberté. Doté de fenêtres largement ouvertes sur un petit boisé des Giardini, The Index entre tout particulièrement en résonance avec une philosophie architecturale favorisant une implantation organique du bâtiment sur le site naturel. Né à Montréal, en 1974, David Altmejd vit et travaille à Montréal, New York et Londres. David Altmejd creates powerful installations that, while informed by architectural philosophy, teem with sensory excess. In The Index, Altmejd transforms the helicoid Canadian pavilion into an aviary like no other. Composed of wooden bridges, sections of trees and steel and glass mirrors that are layered and interconnected, the work is inhabited by flocks of stuffed birds, birds fabricated from materials at hand and fragmented bodies of half-men, half-birds - the whole richly ornamented with quartz crystals and mirror shards. The imposing sculpture lies in a glass display case with mirrored sides, thereby exacerbating its formal and material possibilities. The title refers to the diversity of species and its collection. Classification and organization into an avifauna, with an internal balance that ensures perpetuity, communicates the ineluctable unity of life. David Altmejd has exhibited widely, notably in the Istanbul and Whitney Biennials and, in just a few years, has achieved an enviable place on the international art scene. Cette publication s'avère être la première monographie de David Altmejd, artiste montréalais vivant et travaillant à New York. On nous y présente une abondante documentation, notamment sur son oeuvre 'The University', exposée à la biennale du musée Whitney et acquise par le musée Guggenheim. Altmejd nous propose une architecture moderniste peuplée par des loup-garous en décomposition. Lors de leurs fréquentes apparitions dans des contes de fées, la mythologie grecque et des films d'horreur, ces créatures provoquent soit la sympathie ou l'horreur. L'installation de l'artiste vibre d'énergie potentielle et la structure labyrinthique qui abrite ces créatures a le pouvoir de séduire ou d'effrayer. L'essai dégage les traits singuliers de ce jeune talent déjà reconnu internationalement. This first assessment of David Altmejd's meteoric career investigates work produced from the late 1990s to today. Altmejd first came to the world's attention at the Whitney Museum's 2004 Biennial. 'The University', a piece exhibited at the Andrea Rosen Gallery and then purchased by the Guggenheim, is but one of the subjects of this splendidly illustrated monograph. Altmejd's complex labyrinthian work, populated by ghoulish entities drawn from fairy tales, Greek mythology and Hollywood B-movies, juxtaposes a Modernist architectural model with a teeming world of sensory excess. Philosophical and literary references, particularly Quignard and Borges, articulate a visual obsession with the metamorphosis of the body. The resulting œuvre, while emanating architectural precision, draws the viewer into dark recesses of the psyche. In English and French. An investigation of the inner worlds of artists David Altmejd, Patrice Duhamel, Michael A. Robinson and Ève K. Tremblay who delve into transient states. The worlds they invent constitute a kind of investigation where the common motif is a quest in the labyrinth of the psyche. Whether through dreams, tales, delirium or the absurd, they create a multi-referential iconography opening onto parallel worlds and propose an exploration of an outside time in which the process of inner transformation is both the basis and the objective. Que ce soit par la voie du rêve, du conte, du délire ou de l'absurde empruntée par les artistes, l'auteure commente une iconographie aux références multiples qui ouvre sur des mondes parallèles.
