Maurice Cullen and His Circle (out of print)
Crystal S. Parsons

Drawing from various stylistic inspiration and sources, Maurice Cullen, J.W. Morrice, William Brymner and Edmund Morris painted landscape subjects in Canada and abroad. The author discusses their sojourns in France where they were greatly influenced by the Impressionists and their return to Canada where they applied their Continental experience to the Canadian landscape. While they were not a formal group, their individual responses to the aesthetic challenges contributed to the development of painting in Canada. Younger painters like A. Y. Jackson, later a member of the Group of Seven, were in turn influenced by Cullen and his circle.
