Ana Rewakowicz: Dressware and Other Inflatables

Ana Rewakowicz, a multidisciplinary artist born in Poland of Ukrainian parents, has been living in Canada since 1988. This first monograph on her work explores her questioning of identity as expressed through clothing and habitation. In contrast to the stable mass of monumental sculpture and architecture, her costumes and structures are an air-filled, mobile art form concerned with places and the people that activate them. Incorporating materials such as rubber, polyurethane, reversible foil, fans and solar panels, Rewakowicz harnesses technology to build intimate public experiences and fashions based on function and traveling interiors. Just as the artist has lived her own personal diaspora, her art crosses into many dicsiplines including invention, design, performance and relationism. In English and French.
Cette première monographie sur l'œuvre de Rewakowicz interroge de diverses manières toute la question de l'identité reliée à l'habitat et au vêtement. En contraste avec la masse stable qu'est la sculpture et l'architecture monumentale, les costumes et structures de l'artiste sont gonflables et mobiles, et s'intéressent aux lieu et aux personnes qui les activent. En utilisant des matériaux tels le latex, le polyéthylène, le papier d'aluminium et des panneaux solaires, Rewakowicz apprivoise les technologies afin de créer des expériences publiques et des vêtements fonctionnels qui peuvent se transformer en architecture portable, voir nomade. Epistrophe: Wall Paintings by Denyse Thomasos

A publication more precious than most as it documents work that no longer exists. Denyse Thomasos's ephemeral wall paintings blur the lines between Western formalism and post-colonial theory. While revealing a mastery of the elements of Abstract Expressionism, Thomasos's work is concerned with global histories and historical narratives, particularly the Black Diaspora. Her use of the marker, the line and the grid are animated by modernist principles but the architectural structures she evokes are in fact huts, cages and other references to slavery. With three essays and an interview, along with numerous colour plates and fold-outs, this publication is the first extensive monograph on the work of Denyse Thomasos. Born in Trinidad, Thomasos was raised in Canada and educated in the United States where she teaches at Rutgers University. She has exhibited at the Art Gallery of Ontario, New York's Lennon Weinberg Gallery, Hunter College and the Shanghai Museum. M. NourbeSe Philip is an award-winning writer living and working in Toronto. Franklin Sirmans is a former editor of 'Flash Art' and co-curator of the traveling exhibition 'Basquiat'. Gaëtane Verna is now director of the Musée d'art de Joliette.

Irene F. Whittome : Conversations Adru

Fascinated by three abandoned granite quarries in Quebec's Eastern Townships, Whittome developed a multidisciplinary project of intriguing scope. Assembling a team that included an art historian and an ethnolinguist, she explored and documented the quarry area and its concomitant socioeconomy. This publication presents the fruit of Whittome's exploration of the quarries' history and culture, an interest that resulted in their purchase as a site for teaching and research. A multidisciplinary artist, Whittome is recognized for the rigour of the architectural structures that characterize her work. Conversations Adru, a multimedia installation of sculpture, photography, artifacts and electro-acoustic soundtrack of sounds captured from the site, is a richly evocative meditation on time and its transcendence. Fascinée par trois carrières de granite abandonnées dans les cantons de l'est du Québec, Irene F. Whittome a développé un projet multi-disciplinaire d'une intrigante envergure. Avec un historien d'art et une ethnologue elle a exploré et documenté les carrières et leurs environs, ainsi que les aspects socio-économiques qui l'accompagnaient. Cette publication nous présente les résultats des explorations de ces carrières effectuées par Whittome. Ces résultats ont menés à l'achat des carrières afin qu'elles soient utilisées comme laboratoires et sites d'enseignement. Conversations Adru, une installation multi-médias de sculptures, photographies, artefacts et bande sonore électro-acoustique provenant du site, nous offre une méditation riche et évocatrice sur le temps et sa transcendance. Beyond Words/ Au-delà des mots

The art in Beyond Words encourages viewers to think of language as something more than a transparent medium of communication. Each piece incorporates text in ways that defeat a simple reading. Letraset collage, pulled threads, sandblasted glass and recorded sound are some of the media represented. Some of the works voice languages other than English, such as Cree, Hebrew and French. Les oeuvres présentées dans Au-delà des mots encouragent le spectateur à considérer le langage comme étant plus qu'un médium de communication transparent. Chaque pièce incorpore le texte d'une manière qui repousse la faible esquisse de la lecture. Qu'il s'agisse de polices de caractère, d'écriture cursive ou de pages imprimées, le spectateur doit se départir de ses repères verbaux et s'intéresser à la forme et au matériau : formes verbales et sonores et matériaux tels des perles et le verre sablé. Positioning itself as an observatory for contemporary creation, the gallery invited 6 artists and a group of video artists to incorporate the space itself into their creations. The materials used range from phosphorescent lights, wood, video, photography and paint and the results are as diverse as they are unique.
En affirmant son rôle en tant qu'observatoire de la création contemporaine, la galerie a invité 6 artistes et un groupe de vidéastes a incorporer l'espace même de la galerie à l'intérieur de leurs installations. Les matériaux utilisés varient entre matières phosphorescentes, bois, vidéo, photographie et peinture et les résultats n'en sont que plus diversifiés.
