Over the past 20 years the Toronto-based artists have produced video and photography projects to international critical acclaim. This publication documents five major video works: Blood Records (which premiered at the Museum of Modern Art), Make Love Not War, Bump in the Night, We're Getting Younger All the Time and Practicing Death. Adroitly threading history with fiction, Steele and Tomczak explore the political dimensions of experiences as human and "ordinary" as self-image, love, health and aging. In his essay, Ardenne discusses the unrelenting interrogation of the body that pervades their work. Lisa Steele and Kim Tomczak teach in the visual studies program at the University of Toronto and are recognized leaders in the world of video art. Paul Ardenne is the author numerous books on contemporary art, most recently Contemporary Practices: Art as Experience (Dis Voir).
Depuis les 20 dernières années, les artistes torontois de renommée internationale, Lisa Steele et Kim Tomczak produisent des projets photographiques et vidéographiques qui ne cessent d'épater les critiques. Cette publication explore une triade délicate, soit celle de la confiance, de la peur et de la mort à travers cinq oeuvres : Blood Records (présentée pour la première fois au Musée d'art moderne de New York), Make Love Not War, ... bump in the night, We're Getting Younger All The Time et Practicing Death. Ces oeuvres ponctuent un parcours où s'entrecroisent histoire et fiction dans une entreprise critique où la pratique artistique manifeste la dimension politique derrière l'expression des émotions ordinaires. Des émotions telles l'appartenance sociale, l'amour, la santé et le vieillissement. Ardenne explore le questionnement perpétuel qu'est le corps qui imprègne leurs oeuvres. Lisa Steele et Kim Tomczak enseignent à l'Université de Toronto et sont reconnus comme des références dans le champ de l'art vidéogaraphique. Paul Ardenne est l'auteur de plusieurs livres traitant de l'art contemporain, notammant L'Art dans son moment politique (La lettre volée).

Lisa Steele and Kim Tomczak's work forms an essential vein in the bedrock of video art history, offering a broad sweep of approaches to video making that have preoccupied media artists over the past twenty years. While "The Blood Records" develops a narrative about a young woman receiving treatment for tuberculosis in a rural sanitarium in 1944, the whole is woven into a tale that excavates the historical position and cultural impact of the disease. Hoolboom offers a critical commentary that glides across the centuries to touch Western culture's conflicted relationship with disease and death. Lamoureux peels away the layers of imagery and text in the tape to reveal the poetics and politics at work in the young woman's feverish tale. The extraordinary nature of the piece has been acknowledged by a publication that reflects the quality of the work, a bookwork that reproduces - in two volumes - the images and texts from the tape.

L'oeuvre de Lisa Steele et Kim Tomczak constitue une des pierres d'assise de la vidéo d'art au Canada. Elle englobe une vaste gamme d'approches qui sont celles des praticiens de l'art médiatique depuis une vingtaine d'années. Si l'oeuvre s'articule autour d'une tuberculeuse francophone qui se fait soigner dans un sanitorium dands l'ouest canadien en 1944, le contexte sociale de l'époque est adroitement introduit dans un récit onirique qui tire de l'oubli la situation historique et l'impact culturel de la maladie. Trois textes offrent des analyses critiques des bûts poétiques et politiques des artistes. Deux volumes en un coffret.
