Sylvia Safdie: The Inventories of Invention / Les inventaires de l'imaginaire

Taking as their departure point the signature methodology of the Montreal artist's approach to the raw materials of her work, the authors elucidate the sources and the processes involved in the artist's transformation of organic and found forms into sculptures, paintings, installations and videos. The blurring between art and nature, between observation and creation, and between multitudinous times, all inform the continuum of form in culture and the singularity of the artist's intervention in it. Sylvia Safdie has exhibited widely, most recently at the Canadian Cultural Centre, Paris (publication: Other Places). Her work also was included in the group exhibition Afterimage, organized in conjunction with the Montreal Holocaust Museum. In English and French.
Cette publication présente des œuvres récentes et inédites de l'artiste montréalaise Sylvia Safdie. Elle s'articule autour de la méthodologie qui caractérise son approche à la matière première de son travail -- sculpture, peinture, installation et vidéo --, soit une réserve, ou un inventaire, de formes trouvées et transformées par l'imaginaire. Deux textes révèlent les sources et les processus associés à cette transformation. Manifestly diverse, this work is unified by the elementary nature of its materials (glass, metal, earth). From the human profiles sketched in the drawings to the dissolution of objects in their reflection, Safdie invites us to gaze. Our initial surprise turns to the contemplation of loss. Wajcman situates Safdie's extremely personal work within a widely shared problematic, both local and global, private and collective, ancestral and contemporary. Born in Libya, raised in Israel and now a Montreal resident, Safdie has exhibited in Toronto, Chicago, New York, San Diego, Copenhagen and Beijing. Most recently she exhibited and participated in the conference "Evocation of the Holocaust in Contemporary Canadian Arts". In English and French.
